The Beginner’s Guide to Topdressing: Smoother, Healthier Lawns in Emsworth & Arundel
Bumpy lawn? Thin in places? Topdressing with the right mix can transform structure, drainage and look; here’s how….
Topdressing is a thin layer of sandy loam/compost brushed into the grass to level, improve drainage and feed the soil. Done after aeration or overseeding, it’s one of the fastest ways to make a lawn look and feel better.
What to use
- Sandy loam/root-zone for most West Sussex lawns (improves drainage on clay).
- 3–5 mm depth across the surface; up to 10 mm on localised dips.
When to do it
- Spring (active growth) or early autumn (warm soil + seasonal rain).
How to apply
- Mow, then aerate.
- Spread evenly with a shovel or spreader.
- Brush in with a lute or stiff broom until you can just see leaf tips.
- Overseed beforehand where thin; water to settle.
